Engelberg, Switzerland — book this one.
It is the closest thing to Zermatt's shape at roughly half the price: 2,017 m of lift-served vertical (Zermatt is ~2,279 m), three glaciers, a top station at 3,020 m, and five genuine 576–1,959 m freeride descents — attached to a working town of 4,375 people with a Benedictine monastery, a Coop and a Migros in the centre, and a gondola 8–10 minutes' walk from the train station.
It is also the only resort on this list where the gym question has a clean published answer: Sporting Park, CHF 16 a visit, real squat rack, open 09:00–21:00 daily.
Weekly all-in for two, mid-January: about $2,350–2,750. Comfortably inside budget, with the cheapest walkable apartment at $914 for the week and free cancellation.
Runner-up on terrain, if you'll accept a tighter budget: Chamonix. Deepest terrain in the Alps and the only unambiguous town (pop. 8,705, tunnel freight, hospital, ENSA). Aiguille du Midi is a 8–10 min walk from Place Balmat and the Vallée Blanche is the single best day here. But see the Grands Montets finding below — it materially downgrades Chamonix for 2026/27 specifically, and the Mont Blanc Unlimited pass at ~$579 each eats your headroom.
Best value if the skiing wins outright: Alagna (Monterosa). Two 2,000 m lift-served itineraries off one lift, legal heliski, almost empty midweek — for $977–1,690 a week. The cost is that there is no gym within 36 km and the village is 430 people.
Best value if the town wins outright: Briançon. A real 11,411-person fortified town with Basic-Fit, Keep Cool (06:00–23:00), a CrossFit box, an E.Leclerc hypermarket and a night train to Paris — and apartments from $511 a week. The cost is that Serre Chevalier isn't actually steep.
The 2027 calendar is unusually clean, and it points at one week.

1. Chamonix's Grands Montets summit is still closed — and will be for your trip.
The post-2018-fire replacement has slipped to December 2027, one season after you'd go. Grands Montets currently tops out at Bochard 2,765 m, not 3,295 m. The operator confirms it by omission: Mont Blanc Unlimited is sold as covering "Grands Montets (excluding summit)". The Argentière glacier classics — Pas de Chèvre from the summit, Rectiligne, the full 2,000 m top-to-bottom — are not lift-accessible in 2026/27. A new Argentière→Lognan gondola does open for 2026/27, so the lower half is freshly rebuilt. Vallée Blanche off the Aiguille du Midi is unaffected and remains the reason to come.
2. La Grave's cable car is a 50-year-old single point of failure that has already failed.
On 12 Dec 2024 a defect was found on a carrying cable; the replacement then went wrong when an anchor rated for 65 tonnes failed at 17, dropping 2.5 km of steel cable and damaging two pylons. The lift did not open until 15 March 2025 — two-thirds of the season gone. Winter 2025/26 ran normally. Separately, the planned third section to the Dôme de la Lauze was suspended by the Marseille court on 26 May 2026 over collision risk to the bearded vulture, so the ageing diesel Girose drag lift should still be the top link. If you book La Grave, refundable accommodation isn't a preference — it's the whole strategy.
3. Monterosa's best lift is not on the normal pass.
The standard Monterosa Ski pass excludes the Passo dei Salati → Punta Indren Funifor — the lift that makes Alagna a freeride destination. You buy an €8/day supplement at the lift, or the dedicated "Monterosa Freeride Paradise" product. The online shop literally sells multi-day tickets as "With Indren" vs "Without Indren". Budget ~€48 extra on a six-day trip and buy the right one.
Ranked against your stated priority order: (1) extreme terrain, (2) ease of getting from bed to lift, (3) a real town — then filtered by the $3,000/week all-in budget.
82 km of pistes with a single 4 km black run, versus five world-class freeride descents. For a serious skier the pistes are a warm-up and a transit network. The "Big 5", with official GPS verticals:

Laub is sustained 30–40°. Galtiberg crosses the Galt Glacier and has two named killers — the Götterquergang traverse runs out over a cliff, and the Graben couloir is a dead end; transceiver/probe/shovel/airbag are listed as required and a guide is strongly recommended. Steintäli sits north and shaded behind the Jochstock, so it holds powder days after a storm — the day-4 run of a high-pressure week.
Real constraint: reaching Klein Titlis takes four long lifts (Titlis Xpress → Trübsee → Stand → Rotair), and the Rotair is shared with sightseers. Weekend mornings and midday queue. Midweek is close to essential — it's 30 min from Lucerne.
January over March here, uniquely — Galtiberg ends at 1,081 m and Laub at 1,255 m, and those are the first things to go. Engelberg sits on the northern Alpine rim and catches the full brunt of northerly storms, which is why it over-delivers powder for its size.
Vallée Blanche is the reason to come: Aiguille du Midi 3,842 m down the Mer de Glace, starting with the arête and its ~50° drops both sides, 4–6 hrs, harness and rope required. Variants: Voie Normale, Vrai Vallée Blanche, Petit Envers and Grand Envers du Plan. Brévent/Flégère gives the Combe Lachenal bowl and the Charles Bozon black (~1,500 m). Grands Montets, reduced, still has Combe de la Pendant, the Bochard off-piste and the Magic Forest trees.

Honest verdict: the reference big-mountain destination, but the gap between lift-accessed skiing and mountaineering-with-skis is starker here than anywhere. Without a guide and glacier competence, 2026/27 Chamonix gives a good-but-not-extraordinary off-piste week across four unconnected sectors, losing 30–60 min a day to valley transfers. Budget for guides.
March, clearly. Chamonix town is only 1,035 m — January valley snow is unreliable and it can rain in town. The Vallée Blanche is often not in condition in early January (crevasse bridges unformed, arête icy). Mid-March gives filled bridges, the handrail in place, long days, and the Grand Envers variants become realistic.
Gemsstock 2,961 m − Andermatt 1,444 m = 1,517 m. Only 4 lifts and 31 km of pistes, of which 0 km is easy and 55% is difficult — there is literally no green or blue terrain on Gemsstock.
Correction worth knowing: the Bernhard Russi Run is not the off-piste north face — it's groomed black piste no. 71, 6 km and 950 m vertical over the Gurschen Glacier, patrolled and avalanche-controlled. The real north-facing bowl that "holds powder for days" has no named, marked, controlled itinerary. Treat it as backcountry; UIAGM guide strongly advised.
Two structural risks: the cable car is a single point of failure and a bottleneck — you queue in the village and at the mid-station — and if Gemsstock shuts for wind you're left with the mellow Nätschen/Sedrun/Disentis cruising. Disentis is linked by train, not lift.
Mid-March on balance. The 1,444 m base is high for a Swiss village and the north aspect preserves powder all season, so you lose little by going later — and you gain daylight, stability on the 40–45° Guspis/Giraffe terrain, and far better odds the cable car actually runs. January is the better powder lottery ticket but carries more closure risk on a mountain where one lift failing removes your reason for being there.
Alagna 1,191 m; ski base 1,212 m; Punta Indren 3,275 m. Lift-served vertical 2,063 m. Access chain: gondola → Pianalunga 2,046 m → Funifor → Passo dei Salati 2,971 m → Funifor → Punta Indren. About 30 minutes village-to-glacier.

Glacier access via Punta Indren, with Capanna Gnifetti (3,647 m) and Capanna Margherita (4,554 m, highest hut in Europe) onward. Heliski is legal and openly sold — Guide Alpine Alagna run it as a standard service; guided freeride from €80/person shared, €380 private. FWT Challenger runs here.
Honest downside: almost entirely guide-dependent, the Indren Funifor is a bottleneck, and if it's shut for wind your day collapses to ordinary intermediate pistes. Only 11% of the 132 km is graded difficult — the piste map is beside the point.
Lean March — a shut Indren Funifor guts the whole proposition, and it's a high, wind-exposed lift that runs more reliably later. Accept that the Balma/Malfatta exits down to 1,200 m will be spring snow at the bottom. January gives the least-tracked conditions of anywhere here; the place is genuinely empty midweek.
Cresta d'Arp 2,755 m, Cresta Youla 2,624 m, town 1,224 m, Dolonne 1,210 m. 18 lifts, 33 runs, only 5 black, 42.4 km of piste. Lift-served vertical is two numbers: 1,545 m counting Arp → Dolonne (which the operator lists under off-piste itineraries) or 1,414 m of actual pisted vertical.
Verdict: a modest intermediate area attached to a genuinely alive town. Ski it unguided and you'll exhaust the serious terrain in two or three days. Budget for guides (collective freeride €155/pax; Toula €275) and the odd heli drop (from €390/pax, longest descent 1,750 m) and it becomes outstanding — plus Chamonix is a bus through the tunnel from €15.
Mid-January if you're coming for the freeride — snow-forecast's 2007–2026 record says the snowiest week in Courmayeur is week 2 of January, it's low-season pass pricing, and the lower mountain (1,210–2,256 m) faces east/south-east and bakes in March. Mid-March only if your priority is the high glaciers (Vallée Blanche, Toula, Brenva at 3,000–3,466 m).
The tell that this is a real freeride destination: the headline expert descents are itineraries and off-piste, not pistes, and Mont Gelé has no pisted descent at all. Top Mont Fort 3,330 m; Le Châble 821 m. Le Châble → Mont Fort is a 2,509 m span — but that's span, not one run: realistic big descents are Mont Fort→Tortin ~1,280 m and Mont Gelé→Tortin 950 m over 4,300 m.
Named lines: Chassoure–Tortin (the "Tortin wall", north-facing, huge moguls), Gentianes–Tortin, Stairway to Heaven (north-facing, 10-min bootpack from Gentianes, holds cold powder into spring), Backside of Mont Fort (glaciated, long walk-out via Siviez), Vallon d'Arbi (cliff-exposed traverse), Col des Mines and La Marleinaz (south-facing, mornings only), and Bruson — the best tree skiing in the 4 Vallées.
Bec des Rosses, honestly: not a roped-off competition venue — the east side carries "a collection of other skiers' tracks" — but outside the patrolled area with no control, no patrol, no marked line, ~50–51° sustained with 55–60° entries, mandatory air and blind landings. A season-defining objective with a guide on the right day, not something you lap.
Mid-March, before the Xtreme. The south-facing aspect problem is real, but Verbier's marquee lines — Gentianes–Tortin, Stairway, Chassoure — are precisely the north-facing ones that survive March, and the Mont Fort glacier is at its best. ⚠ 2027 FWT Xtreme date not published; 2026 ran 28 Mar.
Honest verdict: not a freeride destination. 250 km and 82 pistes but only 13 black runs (13%), no glacier, and max continuous descent ~1,300 m. The independent read is blunt: terrain suits experts "due to extensive off-piste, though not particularly steep… accessibility over extreme difficulty, making it ideal for confident intermediates learning freeriding." Even the flagship Vallon de la Montagnole is described as "not too technical."
What it genuinely does have: the Vallon de la Montagnole (~1,000–1,100 m, due north off the Yret, exiting onto the black Tabuc), La Cucumelle flanks (over 1,000 m without meeting anyone), L'Eychauda bowls, and the Couloir de la Balme. And the real strength — tree skiing across roughly two-thirds of the mountain in larch, which sheds its needles so "you can see your line for hundreds of metres." Some of France's best terrain for a white-out. ⚠ The key lift is bad: the Yret is a 1984 fixed-grip triple, 16-minute ride.
Téléphérique des Glaciers de la Meije, built 1976/77: La Grave 1,470 m → Peyrou d'Amont 2,416 m → Col des Ruillans 3,173 m, with Girose glacier drags reaching ~3,550 m. Vertical 2,150 m — 2,300 m if you ski below the resort to the road.
No pisted runs, confirmed in the strongest terms: "no piste machines and no groomed slopes, apart from a single blue on the glacier"; "below 3,200 m there is no signposting, no grooming and no avalanche control." The operator states you are personally liable for any accident. Patrollers advise from a wooden chalet at the base and that is the extent of the safety net. Named terrain: the Vallons and Chancel itineraries, Trifides couloirs, Col du Lac. Beacon, shovel, probe mandatory; guide strongly recommended.
March. Holds cold snow better than anywhere here (north-facing off the Meije with the Girose on top), but January brings short days on a mountain where route-finding matters, a thin snowpack over the crevassed upper Vallons — and the historical fact that when this lift breaks, it breaks in December.
1,507 m vertical, 200 km of marked powder routes alongside 300 km of piste, the Valluga north face and Bridge Couloir (40°, guide mandatory — confirmed officially, there's a crossed-out-skis sign at the cable car), Schindlerkar, Mattun, the Rendl backside (1,329 m over 4.5 km), and north-facing Albona at Stuben. Roughly double Livigno's or Arabba's snowfall (380 cm/yr, January peak 43 cm/week). A real town of 2,357 with a Railjet station in the centre, Arlberg WellCom gym at €11.50/entry or €46/week, and Spar + Billa on the main street. Walk to the Galzigbahn from Dorf; Nassereinbahn 5 min east.
Biggest vertical of the Swiss options (1,775 m, Mittelallalin 3,456 m), most snow-sure, and the only resort here where March out-snows January (45 vs 33 cm/week). Car-free, real village of 1,637. Coop on Untere Dorfstrasse. Aqua Allalin gym CHF 25 with pool (Nautilus machines, not free weights); CrossFit Saas-Fee inside the Walliserhof has platforms and competition barbells but published a closure notice — email first.
Grande Motte funicular lifts you 2,100 → 3,032 m in 6–7 min, then cable car to 3,456 m; Tignes vertical 1,906 m. Real lines: Vallon de la Sache (~1,200 m, 10 km, under a 3-min hike — but a wrong turn puts you above large cliffs), Les Tufs (nine couloirs, 45–53°), Couloir des Pisteurs (44°, 300 m, 45-min approach), Col Pers (~1,100 m, only 30–35° — the danger is the Gorges de Malpasset exit, not the pitch). Face de Bellevarde is 850 m at max 35.4° — a groomed World Cup leg-burner, not a technical test.
Val d'Isère is the better base: an 18th-century Baroque church, semi-pedestrianised centre with roads buried underground, and — the single best fact — the Solaise gondola and Olympique 3S both leave the same hub, the Rond-Point des Pistes, 5 min from the main street. Val Claret is 1968 concrete on a treeless shelf with no civic life. Tignes has the better gym: Le Lagon, €12.50 single / €65 weekly, with squat cages and free weights — and it publishes its prices, which Val d'Isère doesn't.
Three genuinely good north-facing blacks straight to the village (Fodoma 2.8 km at max 56%, Sourasass 3.3 km / 749 m, Ornella Variante), the Marmolada "La Bellunese" — 12 km and ~1,823 m from Punta Rocca 3,269 m (a groomed red, long and scenic rather than hard), and guided access to Val Mesdì, the most famous freeride descent in the Dolomites (1,200–1,500 m through a limestone canyon off Sass Pordoi). Lifts leave directly from the village.
But: 275 permanent residents, only 14% difficult terrain, the second-driest January here (20 cm/week), no gym at all — the nearest is Dòlaondes in Canazei, 15 km over the Passo Pordoi — one small Despar, and four bars. It will be quiet at night. Choose it for pistes and scenery, not off-piste.
