Every figure below was fetched from a live Airbnb search page for the exact 2027 dates on 10 Sep 2026. None is estimated. Four things are worth knowing before trusting them.
Airbnb quotes in USD by default
A/B testing the same Revelstoke listing with ¤cy=USD and ¤cy=CAD returned $2,182 and $3,018 — a ratio of exactly 1.383, the CAD rate. The default is USD. Page summarisers confidently mislabel this as CAD or JPY when they see a bare dollar sign. Every price on this page is US dollars, including the Canadian and Japanese ones. Do not re-convert them.
Totals are before tax
Airbnb's search total covers the nightly rate plus fees, not lodging tax. Telluride's rate was verified at 11.9% — 2.9% state, 4.5% town sales, 2.0% excise, 2.5% short-term rental. Others are applied at the stated assumptions: BC 16%, CO 16%, UT 15%, WY 13%, MT 12%, NM 15%, Quebec 18.5%. Kutchan adds a 2% accommodation tax.
The washer filter lies
Listings returned under amenities[]=33 repeatedly turned out to have shared coin-operated laundry. Three separate cases were caught this way. Only options marked confirmed below had in-unit laundry verified on the listing page itself. Treat every other washer claim as unverified.
Listing titles are A/B tested
The same room ID returned different names on different fetches — room 44646128 came back as both "Heart of the Village+Free Parking" and "Village stroll views, 5 min to gondolas" at the same price. Key on the room ID, not the name. And open every listing: several of the cheapest "Telluride" results sit on the Valley Floor, two miles from town.

The terrain, honestly
The genuinely extreme
Snowbird and Alta are the steepest lift-served skiing in the United States and it is not close. Snowbird's 125-person tram climbs 2,900 ft to Hidden Peak in seven minutes, feeding the Upper Cirque, Great Scott, Pipeline and the Gad chutes; Alta adds High Rustler, the Baldy Chutes and Main Chute. Snowbird claims over 500 in of snow, Alta 405 in on the conservative measure. The AltaSnowbird joint ticket opens 4,700+ acres across both, though Alta remains skiers-only, so snowboarders cannot use the connection.
Jackson Hole has the biggest continuous lift-served vertical in the US at 4,139 ft, verified on the resort's own stats page, with a 50% expert terrain split and an open gate system onto 3,000+ acres. Corbet's Couloir is a 15–20 ft mandatory entry drop onto a 50° pitch. The Hobacks give nearly 2,000 ft of open powder. Cody Peak's Central Chute and Once Is Enough are serious avalanche terrain with few safe zones. The honest caveat is snow volume: the resort claims 458 in, ZRankings' adjusted figure is 368 in — materially less than Snowbird.
Kicking Horse is the chute mountain. 4,314 ft of vertical, 60% advanced-expert, and 75–85 inbounds chutes. Ozone is a former Freeride World Tour venue reached by a 20-minute hike; T1 and T2 are 10–45 minute bootpacks; Feuz Bowl holds 27 chutes. An independent review notes the double-blacks "can quickly cliff out or require mandatory straightlining with little to no notice," and that the single-blacks ski like experts' terrain elsewhere. The catch is that the entire upper mountain hangs off one gondola.
Revelstoke's claim to the longest lift-served vertical in North America checks out at 1,713 m / 5,620 ft, with roughly 45% advanced-expert terrain and about 35 ft of snow across North Bowl, Greely Bowl and the hike-to Sub-Peak. Backcountry gates are plentiful and most do not filter back inbounds — you are committing. Anyone returning via inbounds terrain must do so by 3:45pm. The weakness is a 510 m base: lower-mountain snow goes heavy, and March down low can be poor.
Big Sky has the most vertical here at 4,350 ft and the most formally serious single line in North America. The Big Couloir requires a check-in with patrol and a qualified partner; two skiers descend every 15 minutes from a sign-out shack at the tram summit; avalanche gear is mandatory and violators face lifetime bans. It is roughly 1,400 vertical feet at up to 50°. The problem is snow: 265 in, roughly half Snowbird's.
Taos has the highest expert share in the study at 51%, 1,000 m of vertical, and a gate culture where patrol may question your competence before letting you onto the West Basin or Highline ridges. Al's Run is 1,800 ft of sustained moguls directly above the base. Stauffenberg is roughly 45° and two ski-lengths wide. Everything is inbounds with daily avalanche mitigation — a clean legal picture, unlike Telluride's.
Strong, with an asterisk
Telluride is the one the brief guessed at, and the guess is broadly right — but it is more gate- and hike-dependent than the marketing implies. Gold Hill Chutes 3–5 are permanently closed; the rest need a 15–30 minute hike and the resort's own guide warns they "are not open continually." Palmyra Peak is a 1–1.5 hour hike. Bald Mountain's gate closes at 2pm. Black Iron Bowl has the best effort-to-reward ratio, with Genevieve reachable in 5–10 minutes. Strip out the gated terrain and the reliable lift-served steep is Revelation Bowl, Black Iron after a short hike, and the Plunge and Spiral Stairs falling into town. The San Juans also carry one of the most persistently unstable snowpacks in the US, which governs how often those gates open at all.
Bear Creek is out of bounds, not a sidecountry perk. Access is only via specific USFS boundary gates. A San Miguel County court recognised a public right to cross the Gertrude and Modena mining claims along the Wasatch Trail, but the easement covers the trail only. The resort does not patrol it and does not mitigate it. Exiting anywhere other than a legal gate means a pulled pass and possible criminal charges. Bear Creek has killed people.
Whistler's top end is real: Couloir Extreme is a 2,500-vertical-foot chute off 7th Heaven, ranked a top-ten steepest by Skiing. Spanky's Ladder is a 15 m bootpack from the Glacier Chair into Ruby, Diamond and Sapphire Bowls — very steep, cliffs throughout. Peak Chair holds The Couloir, Cirque and West Cirque. The caveats are that this terrain is alpine and closes in storms, the base is low enough to rain, and it is the most crowded resort in North America.
Crested Butte has shorter terrain than Telluride — 933 m of vertical, with signature runs of 120–670 m — but it is inbounds and avalanche-controlled rather than gated sidecountry, so it is open far more reliably. Rambo is the steepest lift-served cut trail in North America at roughly 55°, though only about 400 ft long. The Extremes run to roughly 542 acres of inbounds double-black. The access lifts are wind-sensitive surface lifts.
Fernie's five bowls hold 344 in of snow, the most of any Canadian Rockies resort. Currie Bowl is the signature: consistently steep fall line, dominated by double-black, with triple-black lines off the headwall. Polar Peak tops the resort out and every run off it is double-black — but it reportedly opens less than 10% of a typical season on wind and avalanche closure. Plan around Currie, not Polar.
Hakuba is the only mountain in Japan here with sustained, big-vertical, genuinely steep lift-served terrain. Happo-One runs 1,071 m from 760 to 1,831 m with a 37° maximum; the Omusubi and Black Back off-piste zones average 27°, which is sustained rather than a single pitch. Omusubi has a formal patrol-inspected gate open roughly early January to early March. The real prize is the Happo backcountry from the top of the Grat quad — genuine alpine, no patrol, no control. Tsugaike's Double Black Diamond zone has four gates and a registration-required backcountry program; Cortina gets about 13 m of snow and its patrol actively supports tree riding rather than merely tolerating it.
Deep but not steep
Niseko has the best-organised and most legally permissive gate system in Japan — 11 numbered gates, with Gate 3 giving a 20-minute bootpack to the Annupuri summit and Gate 11 opening Mizuno-no-sawa, the only avalanche-controlled zone and the steepest sanctioned terrain on the mountain. Roughly 15 m of snow a year and a typical deepest base of 383 cm. But modelled run pitch across Niseko spans only 2.7° to 21.9°. Against Corbet's or Zermatt's steeps it will feel mellow. It is a tree-and-pillow mountain. Ducking ropes costs your pass, and search-and-rescue is charged at a minimum of ¥100,000.
Red Mountain is 37% black, entirely natural, with no man-made cut trails — tight trees, rocks, stumps and mandatory cliff drops. If "extreme" means no-fall-zone glades it delivers; if it means alpine couloirs it does not. It has not one high-speed chairlift, and reaching Grey's summit takes three consecutive lifts.
Myoko has the biggest vertical in the Japan set at 1,124 m and the highest summit at 1,855 m, but Suginohara's famous 8.5 km run is long rather than steep. Seki Onsen's 45° maximum is the steepest pitch anywhere in this study — on a two-lift hill with 310 m of vertical. Critically, Myoko is much less permissive than Niseko: there is no sanctioned gate network, and Akakura patrol enforces out-of-bounds rules.
Below the bar
Park City has real steep pockets in Jupiter Bowl, McConkey's and the Daly Chutes, but there is no tram, no 4,000 ft sustained fall line, and 23% expert spread thin over 7,300 acres whose centre of gravity is intermediate cruising. Furano is 80% beginner and intermediate, and visitors are repeatedly advised to hire guides to find the off-piste at all. Sun Peaks — an independent review states plainly that "none of Sun Peaks's terrain is truly extreme," and Gil's, the headline hike-to, "isn't overly steep." Rusutsu tops out at 27.6°. Mont-Tremblant has 645 m of vertical, 178 in of snow, no bowls, no chutes, no gates and no backcountry access; La Dynamite's quoted 42° is a peak pitch over a 330 m drop, not a sustained one.

Which week
January is the better half of the calendar for this brief
The three January weeks are midwinter everywhere in the study, and at Telluride they are also the cheap half: 9–16, 16–23 and 23–30 Jan all fall in regular-season lift pricing, while both March weeks are peak for lodging and tickets alike. The combined swing at Telluride is roughly $1,300–1,600 per week.
Avoid 16–23 Jan on an Ikon Base pass. 16–17 January 2027 is blacked out at Revelstoke, Sun Peaks and Red Mountain, costing the first two days of that week. The full Ikon Pass is unaffected.
Japan inverts this
Niseko's peak season runs 24 Dec to 28 Feb, so all three January weeks cost the same in tickets and the most in lodging. The identical-property evidence is stark: Luka Niseko Cabin goes $2,347 to $978 between January and mid-March, and Mori Apartments drops 45–52%.
March, honestly
Hakuba carries the most March risk. Happo's base is only 760 m, on Honshu — the upper mountain holds, with monthly averages of 240 cm in February and 200 cm in March, but the base area gets rain and slush. The upside is that nearly half of Happo's clear winter days fall in March, which is what the alpine backcountry above Grat actually needs.
Niseko has the best March odds — colder, ~15 m annual, still resetting through March, with most of the winter's bluebird days arriving then. Reliability drops noticeably after about 20 March. Myoko is the best March bet in Honshu on altitude alone: an 1,855 m summit, and Seki Onsen stays open into early May.
Revelstoke's low 510 m base makes March down low poor. Crested Butte is the North American March answer — it stays under budget where Telluride does not, and its extreme terrain is inbounds and mitigated rather than gate-dependent.
13–20 March is the weakest week on the list for these priorities — peak pricing in Colorado, past the reliable window in Hokkaido, and the likeliest to be spring slush at Hakuba's base.
What could not be verified
- Whether Airbnb's displayed total already includes tax. The booking module does not render to a fetcher. Telluride's 11.9% was read off a listing page, which implies tax is shown separately — so the all-in figures here are the conservative reading. If tax is already included, every number above is 12–18% pessimistic.
- Snowbird and Alta on-mountain hotel rates. Booking.com returned empty, Expedia and VRBO 429, TripAdvisor 403, and snowbird.com/lodging renders no prices. Phone Snowbird Central Reservations.
- START bus winter timetable — first and last departures, frequency, and whether ski gear is carried. Fares are verified. Call 307-733-4521 before committing to a Jackson-town booking.
- 2026/27 lift ticket prices for Alta, Fernie, Kicking Horse, and Furano and Rusutsu multi-day, plus the AltaSnowbird joint ticket — none published yet. The RCR Rockies season pass price appears only at checkout. The current post-early-bird RED Card price is unknown.
- Kicking Horse's avalanche-gate and inbounds policy — the resort's mountain-stats page 404s. Call 1-800-258-7669.
- A public gym in Rossland, Myoko, Akakura Onsen, Furano city or Big Sky. All are genuine gaps; OpenStreetMap returned nothing for the Japanese ones. If a town gym is a hard requirement these are the weak links — though the Red Mountain ski-in condo above has its own fitness centre.
- Exact resort-base-to-Saint-Jovite distance at Tremblant — Tremblant.ca returns empty to a fetcher, and a routing service gave an implausible 1.4 km.
- Myoko's real accommodation inventory. Airbnb's geocoder for "Myoko" sprawls 30–60 km into Nagano, Iiyama and Joetsu, and the ryokan and pension stock lives on Booking.com, Jalan and Rakuten Travel, none of which would render.
